Dr. Mahjabeen Dhala

Dr. Mahjabeen Dhala is Assistant Professor of Islamic Studies at the Graduate Theological Union in Berekeley, where she also serves as co-editor of the Teaching Theology and Religions Journal, and former Chair of the Women’s Studies in Religion program. Dr. Dhala’s work focuses on retrieving the narratives of premodern Muslim women as theologians, exegetes, and activists. Dr. Dhala's book, Feminist Theology and Social Justice in Islam: A Study on the Sermon of Fatima, published by Cambridge University Press, offers a groundbreaking analysis of a seventh-century public protest initiated by the Prophet’s daughter through the lenses of feminist theology and social justice. Additionally, Dr. Dhala received a Wabash grant to research how visibly Muslim women scholars navigate issues of identity and authority in their teaching, as well as the current state of Muslim female theologians and exegetes in both academic and community settings. With over 25 years of experience as a speaker, educator, and pilgrim guide, Dr. Dhala has served Muslim communities around the world, contributing significantly to religious leadership and academic scholarship.
